Bhubaneswar, Apr 7 (PTI) Vigilance sleuths arrested an engineer for accepting bribe from a contractor in Khorda district, the department said in a statement today.

The accused, an assistant engineer in Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) in Jatni, was arrested yesterday. He was caught red-handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000, the vigilance department statement said.

The assistant engineer was supposed to inspect a renovation and construction work that was carried out by the contractor, and for that the engineer had demanded Rs 30,000 from the contractor, it said.

The contractor agreed to give Rs 25,000 as bribe to the engineer and also informed the vigilance department, the statement said.

The engineer had kept the bribe money in a drawer of his table in his office, it added.

The money was recovered and seized, it said, adding, his rented accommodation located at Khandagiri area here was also searched, the statement added.
