New Delhi, April 9: The Apex Court on Monday asked the Centre, Delhi Government and other concerned authorities not to make unauthorised constructions and sealing of illegal building in Delhi “Political” issues.
A bench consisting Justice Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta said this after Additional Solicitor General ANS Nadkarni, appearing for the Centretold the court that they had held meetings with all the authorities concerned and they have also proposed to constitute a special task force to check all the issues.
“There are a few points and you please take these into account. This is not a political issue,” the bench said.
While preceding the matter, the court also directed the authorities to look into the aspect of fire safety in schools and the huge depletion of groundwater.
The court told the authorities that the health of people in the city is very important than the profit and the authorities should deal with the issue in a holistic manner. The next hearing is scheduled for 18 April.
The apex court on April 4 had made strong statements on the Centre, Delhi government and civic agencies for their failure to stop unauthorised constructions in the city and said “lungs” of the people, especially the children, damaged due to the inaction of the authorities. SC also said due to the continued inaction of the authorities, the people are suffering from severe health problems such as pollution, lung disease and other issues such as parking are arising due to the illegal constructions.
SC is hearing arguments on the validity of the Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act, 2006 and subsequent legislation which protects unauthorised construction from being sealed. It earlier ordered to identify and seal the illegal and offending structures in the city under restoration of 2006 monitoring committee
The monitoring committee was set up on 24 March 2006.
