New Delhi, Apr 11 (PTI) Video-on-demand service HOOQ today said it has appointed Zulfiqar Khan as the Managing Director of its India operations.

He succeeds Salil Kapoor, who has decided to move on to pursue other interests, HOOQ India said in a statement.

“He (Khan) is a familiar and respected name in the industry with immense knowledge of the business,” HOOQ Chief Executive Officer Peter Bithos said.

Khan has over 19 years of with rich experience and has worked across companies like Star India and Eros Now.

HOOQ, which forayed into the Indian market in 2015, is a joint venture of Singtel, Sony Pictures Television and Warner Bros. It operates in Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore apart from India.

The company has steadily ramped up its operations in India through partnerships with Airtel, Vodafone and ACT Fibernet.

The competition in the video-on-demand space in India has intensified specially after the launch of Reliance Jio’s services that saw data tariffs in the country coming down.

While Netflix plays in the premium space, it has seen strong competition from the likes of Amazon Prime and Hotstar. Smaller players like voot, Eros Now, Yupp TV, Hungama and ALT Balaji are also looking at tapping into the Indian market.
