Pacific Palisades (US), Feb 15 (PTI) Anirban Lahiri will try to secure a berth at the Augusta Masters when he tees up at the Genesis Open and Honda Classic over the next two weeks.
The 30-year-old Indian, who had a fine start to the season with Top-10 finishes in two of the PGA Tour events in Asia, also finished T-14 in OHL Mayakoba.
Placed at 60th on the FedEx Cup rankings, his immediate concern is to try and get into Top-50 for a berth into the year’s first Major in Augusta in April.
Lahiri is currently placed 77th and will need some excellent results to move up sharply. Lahiri is paired with Kevin Na and Jon Curran.
This season Lahiri has missed just one cut on six starts as he was T-10 at CIMB Classic, T-5 at CJ Bridges, T-14 at OHL Mayakoba and T-51 and T-55 at Shriners and Farmers. But in his last start, he missed the cut at Waste Management Phoenix Open.
While Lahiri aims towards his immediate goals, the focus this week at the Genesis Open is naturally on Tiger Woods.
The 14-time Major winner, who has been looking promising on his latest comeback, was T-23rd at Torrey Pines. Woods is making his 11th start at Riviera but his first in 12 years.
The big stars to watch out will naturally be World No.1 Dustin Johnson, who was beaten at the tape by Ted Potter Jr at Pebble Beach last week, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy among others.
Justin Thomas still looking for his first Top-10 in 2018, even though eight of his last nine rounds have been 68 or better, is paired with Woods and McIlroy, who is looking for his first win since 2016.
Interestingly, Woods, who made the cut at Torrey Pines, where he has won eight time, had never won at the Riviera, where the Genesis Open is being held this week.
