Chennai Metro phase II to have 104 stations, plan to be submitted by September

Chennai, Aug 2: The second phase of Chennai Metro will be soon be submitted to the state government for approval. The phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail will be stretching over 104.5 km with 104 stations. The phase I of Chennai Metro Rail has been under construction for over six years and has become operational in segments. RITES has been working on a detailed report on the project and will submit its report to the state government in September, a report in Hindu said on Tuesday.

The second phase was delayed due to traffic permissions and opposition by the residents in some areas during the survey. There may be some changes if the Chennai Metro Rail and state government wants to make changes, official sources said. A major part of the second phase of Chennai Metro Rail will be underground as there is not enough road width to accommodate elevated metro corridor. As of now there is provision for only one depot and based on requirement another one could be added. (ALSO READ: Brave Chennai photographer obstruct gang rape, saves woman. Facebook post goes viral)

The cost of the project is also likely to go up as most of the three corridors in phase II are underground. While overground costs Rs 150-200 per kilometer, the underground cost for the same goes up to Rs 400-500 crore. Japan International Cooperation Agency will be funding a part of the project. The fare for the phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail will be on the lines of phase I of the project. The fare ranges between Rs 10-40 for the 10 km stretch.

Meanwhile, the Chennai Metro Rail service between Little Mount and Chennai airport is likely to be commissioned by second week of August. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspected the stations between Little Mount and Chennai airport and approved the services on the 9 km stretch. The officials have given dates to the state government for approval. Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaih Naidu is likely to be present on the occasion.

The first underground stretch of Chennai Rail Metro between Thirumangalam and Nehru Park is likely to be opened by the end of the year.
