Krishna Janmashtami 2016: Thane 'Govindas' break SC rule, build 40 feet tall human pyramid; black flags shown during Dadar Dahi Handi celebrations

Mumbai/Thane, August 25: In a clear violation of the 20 feet cap put on the height of the human pyramid to break the Dahi Handi during Janmashtami, Govindas built an over 40 feet tall pyramid here on Thursday. This came after the Supreme Court on Wednesday, put a cap of 20 feet for the pyramids after rejecting to hear a petition to increase the height of the human pyramids which are made during the Dahi Handi festivities, all over the state, on the occasion of Janmashtami. People across the city protested against the judgement in various ways besides flouting the height rules, including waving black flags at various Dahi Handi celebrations.

According to a report by ZeeNews, an organiser in Thane area, hung the earthen pot or the Dahi Handi at a height of 49 feet. The event also saw a member of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, turning up with a shirt reading, “I will break the law”. In Dadar, meanwhile Govindas used a ladder to reach the Handi, while also waving black flags during the celebrations. Another celebration saw the Govindas making human pyramids while lying on the ground, as a sign of protest. Speaking to ANI, Amara, a Govinda participating in the celebrations said, “SC put ban on 20+ feet pyramids, so this is our symbolic way of expressing displeasure”. ALSO READ: Heightened’ Dahi Handi revelry continues despite court curb

It is not yet known whether the areas, where SC norms were flouted, had the presence of police force or not. Meanwhile the people who participated in such events could be held for contempt of court. Also, the presence of MNS leaders here showed that these events had the political backing of the right-wing party, headed by Raj Thackeray, who is the nephew of Shiva Sena’s founding leader Bal Thackeray. The height of the human pyramids was capped keeping in view the dangers undertaken by the Govindas and since it’s always the youngest participants at the top, lives of kids as young as 10 years are most often put in peril.
