New Delhi, June 19: The ruling party at the centre, the BJP on Monday announced Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as the party’s presidential candidate. However, this decision was not accepted by the Opposition who lashed out at the Narendra Modi government for naming him as he has an RSS background. Defending the decision of the government, senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya asked Opposition what is the problem if he belongs to RSS.

“Don’t see why the opposition has a problem because of his RSS background. Everyone should be proud of Mr. Ram Nath as he is a nationalist,” said Vijayvargiya. On the Bihar governor, the BJP leader, as per NDTV, said the dream of the nation is to have a ‘chaiwala’ PM and ‘Dalit’ President. He also told that Mr. Nath is a humble person and such people think about taking the nation to a greater height.

Talking about the ‘hue and cry’ that opposition made over the choice of BJP’s presidential candidate, Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu stated that the choice made by the Modi government should meet all expectations. The BJP had a three-member committee which was in talks with Congress President Sonia Gandhi and  CPM’s Sitaram Yechury. But apparently, the saffron party said that Opposition did not come up with a name to keep the conversation floating.

Prominent personalities of opposition like Mr. Yechury and Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee have accused the central government of politicising the entire issue. This list also includes BJP’s ally, Shiv Sena. The Opposition, including Mr. Yechury, have said that to attract the Dalit community in the country BJP has nominated a Dalit. Yechury on this went to say that this is a political fight as Bihar’s governor was the head of RSS unit.

On the other hand, Mamata Banerjee, unhappy over the decision told that Mr. Nath isn’t politically known and BJP should have fielded candidates like LK Advani or Sushma Swaraj to be India’s fist citizen. ” If the Modi government wanted to nominate a Dalit there were several prominent faces within the nation,” said 12th CM of Bengal.
