Aarushi-Hemraj Murder Case: Rajesh Talwar, Nupur Talwar Walk Out of Dasna Jail After 4 Years

New Delhi, Oct 13: Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar, parents of Aarushi Talwar, who was murdered in 2008 along with her domestic help Hemraj, walked out of the Dasna Jail on Monday after spending four years behind bars. From being convicted for their daughter and Hemraj’s murder in 2013, Rajesh and Nupur were set free today after being acquitted in the case by Allahabad High Court on Thursday.

Holding black-coloured bags, the Talwars walked out of Dasna jail as a crowd of media unit jostled to gather some reaction from the couple. The couple then went straight to Nupur Talwar’s parents’ home in Noida’s Jal Vayu Vihar where they will be staying for a few days.

Dasna Jail authorities say the Talwar couple will continue to visit the jail every 15 days to treat patients. D Maurya, Jailor, Dasna Jail, said, “The Talwars will continue to visit jail periodically so that medical assistance provided by them to inmates can continue. Talwars gave medical service for free, refused remuneration. If they would’ve taken it, amount would’ve been approximately Rs 49,500.”

It was earlier being said that Rajesh and Nupur Talwar would be released on Friday. However, with delay in formalities and the court being off on Saturday and Sunday, their release got delayed till today.

Allahabad HC Acquits Talwars in Aarushi-Hemraj Murder Case

The Allahabad High Court on Thursday accepted the appeal of Rajesh and Nupur, acquitting them in the Aarushi-Hemraj murder case, adding that the Central Bureau of Investigation probe didn’t have enough evidence to prove the couple murdered their daughter and domestic help.

The division bench comprising Justices Bala Krishna Narain and Arvind Kumar Mishra said that neither the circumstances nor the evidence on record established a chain showing their involvement in the murders of Aarushi and Hemraj. It also directed the authorities concerned to release both the appellants forthwith.

Justice AK Mishra said that the trial judge acted like a maths teacher and took the circumstances and evidence for granted and solved the case like a puzzle.

He also added that the trial judge acted like a film director and “surprisingly assumed fictional animation of the incident.” Justice AK Mishra called the trial judge’s 2013 order as one pronounced out of “extra zeal and enthusiasm” and said that the judge meted out a “partial” verdict based on “self perception”. (Here’s the full text of the Allahabad HC order)

The Aarushi-Hemraj Murder Case

Aarushi Talwar, the daughter of dentist couple Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar, was found dead with her throat slit, inside the bedroom of her residence in Noida’s Jal Vayu Vihar in May 2008. The domestic help of Talwars, Hemraj, was initially suspected to be the one behind the crime after he went missing following Aarushi’s murder. However, two days later, his body was also recovered from the terrace of the house.

The case was initially probed by the Uttar Pradesh police and later, the investigation was handed over to the CBI. In 2013, a Ghaziabad court convicted the parents of Aarushi in the double murder case and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
