An open letter to Kiran Bedi: Thank God the immature Delhi voters chose Arvind Kejriwal over you

Dear Kiran Bedi,

You are not a good loser and sound so bitter after losing the Delhi Assembly Elections. But that is understandable. Like BJP, you too were hoping a repeat of Lok Sabha elections. The outcome must have been a zor ka jhatka. Your erstwhile colleague Arvind Kejriwal returned to power and how! And you thought becoming a chief minister was as easy as a serving a 2-minute noodle. Read: An open letter to Arvind Kejriwal

Your open letter to citizen of India blaming them for your almost unprecedented defeat in Delhi Assembly Elections only adds to the long list of bloopers ever since you entered the electoral politics. Yes, I feel offended. You wrote, “Indian Democracy if it truly wants many well meaning people to stake their experience for mature and good governance, needs a civil culture and law abiding environment. (I am being mild in saying this).”

Are you trying to say that elections in India are not conducted for law abiding, mature and civil citizens? Going by what you said the BJP won last Lok Sabha elections because of immaturity of the people?

Blaming voters of Delhi, you further write, “They do not get it still, that there are no free lunches in life. If you rob Peter to pay Paul, it won’t be long before all get.” Are Delhities not fully informed to take right decision? I am sad to say that in this way you disrespected people’s mandate.

I agree with you that “Public ‘appeals’ through use of congregations must be not be allowed and considered a violation of laws. Hence must be banned.” This was in reference to Jama Masjid Shahi Imam fatwa to vote in favour of AAP in Delhi Assembly Elections. But to blame the fatwa for your or BJP’s loss is too a lame excuse to be accepted by the mature electorate.

Just to put things in perspective, of the total 70 seats, Muslim votes could make significant difference only on 11 seats. According to 2011 census, Delhi has almost 12 per cent Muslim voters. There were five seats in the National Capital where Muslims account for almost or somewhere little over 40 per cent of the total population and hence were able to swing results. Hence, you can’t blame Muslim voters for your party’s failure on 67 seats.

You need to understand the core factor behind your loss. Arvind Kejriwal has been active in Delhi politics since 2013. We don’t know if his motives are noble or not. But he furnished his party from grass-root level. While you entered into the fray just a month before the election and then you expect people to trust and vote for you. Think it from a voter’s point of view. Would you support a leader who emerges from no where and is projected as chief ministerial candidate. You would surely be living in a fool’s paradise if you thought this was possible.

India is blessed to have a woman like you synonymous with women empowerment. You broke the glass ceiling and became the first woman Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the country. You had an excellent career with highs and lows but you proved that a woman can compete with man and can even win. On several occasions you made your fellow countrymen proud. But now after your loss in the Delhi Assembly elections you feel they are immature.

We are glad people like you have entered politics and believe that you will bring positive changes in our political system. My words might hurt you but I see a great leader in you. You need to spend some time to figure out the reasons of your failure. Gone are the days when voters would vote for any Tom, Dick and Harry. They now their vote matters and they will give a chance to the one they think can deliver. They did it in May 2014 and in Delhi Assembly elections. They don’t have anything against you. They hardly know you. The open letter to blame Delhi voters for the loss was a bad idea. Try something else.

I wish you all the best for your political career.

Yours truly,

A common man
