New Delhi, July 24: Controversy and Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) are the two sides of a coin–they can’t remain separated for a long time. The prestigious university, considered a bastion for Left’s student movement, is in news for its vice-chancellor M.Jagadesh Kumar’s request to the Army to install a tank in the premises to instil love for armed forces in the university. While some on the other side of the political spectrum are questioning the move, it is notable that educational institutions including AMU have army equipment installed on campus.

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) also has a Mig 23 on its campus. One of the most prominent minority institutions in the country, AMU had the retired plane installed outside Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET), situated in the campus. In 2009, the IAF gifted a MiG-23 BN fighter aircraft to the University free of cost. The SM219 flew for the last time on March 6, 2009, and remained 30 years in service, safeguarding our skies. It symbolises the Indian Air Force’s struggle and commitment to the country.

That’s not the only educational institutions to have equipment of armed forces installed. IAF has gifted aircraft to a number of schools in the national capital. Delhi’s Modern School has a Hawker Hunter (BA-241) installed. The aircraft had been presented to the school by former Air Chief Marshal SK Mehra.
