New Delhi, Sept 18: The Delhi Police on Monday said that the alleged al Qaeda terrorist Shumon Haq arrested by them was espousing the cause of Rohingyas. Addressing the media, DCP Special Cell P Kushwaha said, “He came to India to set up base in Mizoram, Manipur and send people to Myanmar, basically espousing the cause of Rohingyas.” Kushwaha said that Haq is a British citizen who came to Bangladesh to recruit people.

“Four cartridges, laptops, phones, Bangladeshi currencies, mobile SIM card were recovered from him. He was associated with al Qaeda since 2013 and also visited South Africa and Syria,” Kushwaha said.

The alleged terrorist was apprehended from east Delhi’s Shakarpur area. Haque was arrested near a bus stand in the area at 6 pm on Sunday after a tip-off. He is being interrogated by the police. Central agencies and West Bengal police also cooperated with the Delhi police in the operation.

This comes on a day when Centre has said that the continuous influx of Rohingyas into India was a serious threat to the country’s security. The Centre filed an affidavit on Rohingyas in the Supreme Court on Monday, saying, “Continuance of Rohingyas’ illegal immigration into India and their continued stay has serious national security ramifications and threats. Centre has contemporaneous from security agencies inputs indicating links of some unauthorized Rohingyas with Pakistan terror organisations. Some Rohingyas are indulging in illegal/anti-national activities i.e. mobilisation of funds through hundi/hawala channels, procuring fake Indian identities for other Rohingyas and also indulging in human trafficking,” the affidavit said.
