Hyderabad, Mar 28: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi hosted an extravagant engagement ceremony of his elder daughter on Saturday. The reports of the lavish engagement party didn’t go down well with many who took to social media to slam Owaisi for reportedly spending crores on the celebration.
Some media reports claimed that the family spent a whopping Rs 6 crore on Owaisi’s daughter’s engagement ceremony. A total of Rs 1.25 crore was spent only on imported (from Dubai) gold-plated plates and flower decoration, while Rs 85 lakh was spent on the venue, said a report. More than 400 types of dishes were served to around 10,000 guests.
Following the lavish celebration, an anonymous letter is doing the rounds on social media, reminding Owaisi of his speeches against lavish weddings. The AIMIM chief, in his speeches, has regularly pitched for simple marriage ceremony.
“You once delineated a story of your close friend in your speech who had so many sisters and daughters ready for marriage but he had no money. He is not the one only. There are thousands of such helpless people. When the engagements parties like your daughter’s or wedding parties like Mr Balala’s (MLA) daughter’s get prestigious status in the society, people like your friend can do nothing, but sell out themselves,” said the letter.
Speaking to a news portal, a social activist, working against the tradition of dowry, slammed Owaisi and said he set a bad example for people of the Muslim community. “The incidents of suicides are growing in the community, as the parents cannot afford to marry off their girls. The extravagance of this event sends a clear message that the rich can spend lavishly, while the only option left for poor girls is suicide,” he was quoted as saying.
