New Delhi, Mar 30: Former Rajasthan chief minister and Congress Gujarat In-charge Ashok Gehlot was on Friday appointed as All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary In-charge, Organisation, Training. He replaces Janardan Diwedi, General Secretary, AICC. This comes ahead of Rajasthan Assembly Elections 2018.
Meanwhile, Gehlot has had to relinquish the charge of Gujarat, which was handed over to him before Assembly elections in the state in 2017. He was given the charge just a week ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s rally in the state. Back then, his political rival from his home state Sachin Pilot had congratulated him. But now, with Gehlot out of Gujarat, the politics in Rajasthan Congress is set to heat up. With Rajasthan Assembly elections due this year and general elections next year, the state unit is likely to be divided between Pilot and Gehlot sympathisers. Sources said Gehlot had been focusing on Rajasthan and had begun groundwork there for the forthcoming elections. Interestingly, just a few days ago, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee had got a new chief in Amit Chavda, replacing Bharatsinh Solanki.
Rajeev Satav has been handed over the charge of Gujarat in place of Gehlot, said a Congress statement. Satav is a young MP from Hingoli, Maharashtra. He was the President of the Youth Congress from 2010-2014. Gandhi also appointed Lalji Desai as the chief organiser of the All India Congress Seva Dal, replacing Mahendra Joshi.
