Assam floods: Man dies of electrocution in Guwahati, death toll reaches 7 this month

Guwahati, June 22: A man was killed due to electrocution in Guwahati’s Zoo road area on Thursday morning. According to sources, the man was on his way when he had to walk through a flooded street and was electrocuted in the process. Eye witness claimed that there were others who were about to walk through the water logged street but the man’s death made them realise that there was electricity in the water. Noteworthy that this is the seventh case of death caused by floods in Guwahati.

The person identified as Dulal Malakar, was reportedly an employee of a KFC outlet in the area and hailed from Rangiya district. He was going through his usual routine and decided to brave the water logged street and entered the water following which he was electrocuted. Eye-witnesses claimed that as soon as he entered the water they heard him scream and realised what happened. The others who were about to walk through the same water logged street stopped and they were saved. However, as for Dulal, the same could not be said, as he passed away soon after.

It seems electricity cables from a nearby electricity post broke and fell into the water which was logging on the street causing the water in the street to electrify. Unfortunately for Dulal, he, nor did the other people in the area were aware of that and he decided to walk through that water-logged street.

However, it is still not clear why the electricity distribution corporation authorities failed to realise that there was a fault in the wires or that the wires were broken and was leading towards a hazardous situation.

This is the seventh death in this month, after six people were killed earlier this month due to similar situations in the city.

Following the downpour and incidents of flood, schools were shut down early and school children were taken back home.

Areas of the city of Guwahati are submerged in Thursday’s rain and now electricity services have been affected. Similarly water supply in several homes are affected too during these artificial floods.

Meanwhile other parts of Assam have been affected by floods as well. Several other states like Tripura has also been affected by floods and has rendered many people homeless.

The Government is yet to comment on this incident of death.
