Babasaheb Ambedkar’s 60th death anniversary: Things we need to know

New Delhi, Dec 6: BR Ambedkar  (Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar) was Born on April 14, 1891. He was popularly known as Babasaheb. He was a well known politician and an eminent jurist. He is the father of Indian Constitution.  Babasaheb spent his life in fighting against social discrimination.

Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar died at the age of 65 on December 6, 1956. On his 60th death anniversary, here are some interesting facts which we all should know.

1. He was born in the military cantonment of Mhow in Madhya Pradesh and his family  belonged to Ambavade town, Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra.

2. Ambedkar earned a degree in law and was a doctorate in economics and political science from Columbia University and the London School Of Economics.

3. He was the first Law Minister of Independent India and was asked to write India’s Constitution by the Constituent Assembly. In the constitution he guaranteed freedom to a citizen, abolition of untouchability and introduced reservation for job.

4. He opposed Article 370 that gurantees special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

5. In 1990, Babasaheb was posthumously conferred by Bharat Ratna which is India’s highest civilian award.

6 .Reportedly, he converted into Buddhism and also urged his supporters to do the same.

7. He described his school days situation as  “No peon, No Water”. He was given no attention in class because of his caste and no one would let him touch him water vessel in the school and if the school peon was absent he had to remain thirsty during school hours.  He was considered untouchable by higher castes.

8. Babasaheb’s real name was Bhimrao Sakpal Ambavadekar. His teacher Mahadev Ambedkar gave him his own surname and changed it in school records too, as he was very fond of the young Babasaheb.

9. He was the 14th and the last child of his parents Ramji Maloji Sakpal and Bhimabai.
