If reports are to be believed, the fares have been increased by Rs 1 to Rs 12 for a distance more than 4 kilometers. As the fare hike came into effect, the charge for air condition buses rose to Rs 20 from earlier Rs 15. Commuters looking out for bus passes to Island City and suburbs will now have to shell out Rs 10 for the same. The fare of newly launched Hybrid AC buses has also been increased by Rs 5.
The fare hike of BEST buses has been opposed by Leader of Opposition in BMC, Ravi Raja. According to reports, the fare hike is part of the Undertaking’s effort to reduce their deficit loss and streamline their financial condition. Its parent organization, the BMC, has asked them to implement few steps so as to reduce expenses and improve revenues that would bring down the deficit to Rs 337 crore.
At present, the BEST runs around 500 buses and nearly 30 lakh commuters use this service in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. Fare hike of the BEST bus service is likely to put a huge burden on the people who are dependent on it from commuting to one part of Mumbai from another.
