Bhopal, Apr 9: The Madhya Pradesh Police is gearing up for another ‘Bharat Bandh‘, this time called by anti-reservation groups on Tuesday, April 10. This comes after several messages have been circulated over the social media as well as WhatsApp asking people to join the April 10 Bharat Bandh. While many groups have called for Bharat Bandh protesting against reservation system, some groups say they would be protesting against the violence that erupted during the April 2 Bharat Bandh called by Dalit groups. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also issued an advisory to all states asking them to make necessary arrangements and issue prohibitory orders, if necessary.
The Madhya Pradesh Police have said that they are prepared for the April 10 Bharat Bandh. “We are appealing to citizens to maintain peace and harmony in the state. But we are equally prepared to deal with any untoward situation. There may be differences among members of different communities, but they should not resort to violence. Peace and harmony is necessary for the state to prosper,” MP DGP Rishi Kumar Shukla said on Friday.
The nationwide shutdown by various Dalit organisations on April 2 called against Supreme Court’s order on SC/ST (Atrocities) Act 1989 had swept many north Indian states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, leaving at least 11 people dead. The protests had turned violent after agitators resorted to stone pelting, damaging properties across the country.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi along with other party leaders sat on a fast at Rajghat on Monday, protesting against atrocities against Dalits. “Communal harmony and brotherhood is under threat in Modi govt, they want to divide the society, hence it is the duty of Congress party to fight against such powers and this is what we have come together for,” said Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala.
