Chandigarh, Apr 2: Dalit outfits have called for a nationwide shutdown – Bharat Bandh – to protest against the Supreme Court verdict on the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Punjab is likely to witness the major impact of Bharat Bandh as the state has the highest population of Scheduled Castes (SC) among states. They constitute nearly 32 percent of the state’s 2.8 crore population. The Bharat Bandh call is given by the state’s Samvidhan Bachao Morcha of 200 Dalit and Valmiki organisations. The Punjab government has taken a slew of precautionary measures to maintain law and order during the Bharat Bandh stir. To maintain law and order, four battalions of the Rapid Action Force, four of Border Security Force, along with 12,000 additional police personnel have been deployed.

Here are the services that will remain shut during the shutdown:

All educational institutes, government or private, will remain shut during Bharat Bandh.

Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) buses will not operate.

Buses of Punjab Roadways and PunBus would not ply on the roads in Punjab.

Private transport services have been suspended as well.

Banks will remain closed.

The final practical examinations of class 10 and 12 of Punjab School Education Board, which were scheduled to be held today, will now be held on April 11.

Mobile internet, SMS and dongle services will remain suspended till evening.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) postponed exams of class 10 and 12 students in the state.
