Jaipur, April 9: A Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker on Monday attempted self immolation in Rajasthan’s Jaipur on Monday. His friend said that the activist was disappointed with the recent Bharat Bandh protest that took place on April 2, following which he took the extreme step. He was immediately rushed to rushed to a near-by hospital and is undergoing treatment. The nationwide shutdown by various Dalit organisations on April 2 called against Supreme Court’s order on SC/ST ActAtrocities) Act 1989 had swept many north Indian states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha. . The protests turned violent after agitators resorted to stone pelting, damaging properties across the country. At least eleven people were killed in the violence. In Rajasthan, several members of other castes hit the streets in Rajasthan over the damage caused during April 2 agitation.  The violent mob had torched the houses of a sitting and a former MLA, both Dalits  after which curfew was calmped in the city and over 40 people were arrested.

On March 20, the apex court had introduced the provision of anticipatory bail in the act while directing that there would be no automatic arrest on any complaint filed under the law.
