Bhiwandi civic poll results 2017: Who would emerge victorious from the logistic hub of Maharashtra?
Bhiwandi, May 26: The results of Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation Elections 2017 would be declared today. Polling for all the 90 seats in the Bhiwandi civic body was held on May 24. Bhiwandi, considered as the logistics hub of Maharashtra, is located next door to capital Mumbai. The city witnessed an intense political battle in run-up to the municipal corporation elections. BJP launched an aggressive campaign in Bhiwandi in a bid to wrest the municipal corporation from the Congress. For the 90 seats contested in Bhiwandi, a total of 460 candidates were in the fray. BJP fielded candidates on 78 seats, whereas, the Shiv Sena contested from 68.
The Samajwadi Party and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) formed an alliance in the run-up to the polls, to provide an alternative to the electorate. Both the parties are contesting on 32 seats each.
Among other contenders in the fray are: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), contesting on 9 seats, the Republican Party of India (Athawale) and the Konark Vikas Aghadi group.
In the 2012 Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation elections, Congress had won 26 seats, whereas, the Shiv Sena emerged second, bagging 16. Both the parties formed a post-poll pact to appoint their Mayor of the civic body. BJP had won 8 seats in the civic elections.
BJP’s campaign received a last minute push in this round of polls, with Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis addressing a rally on Sunday. The CM promised 4-5 lakh jobs in the city following the completion of infrastructure projects being undertaken by state government.
