Bhubaneswar fire: Toll rises to 24 in SUM hospital mishap case in Odisha
On Wednesday, another patient identified as Janakibla Hui was shifted to AIIMS after being injured in the hospital fire passed away.
Bhubaneswar, Oct 21: The toll in the Sum Hospital fire has rose to 22 on Friday with the death of two patients who were undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. On Wednesday, another patient identified as Janakibla Hui was shifted to AIIMS after being injured in the hospital fire passed away. Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on Wednesday visited the hospital where 19 people were killed in a fire on Monday. Following which, alleging negligence of the hospital authorities in adhering to fire safety norms, the Fire Services Department lodged an FIR with the Khandagiri police. Nineteen persons were killed in the Intensive Care Unit of the Dialysis Ward of SUM hospital on Monday evening. Another 106 were injured and are undergoing treatment. Four SUM Hospital officials were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the incident. (ALSO READ- Fire in Sum Hospital: Death toll rises to 21)
Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday condoled the deaths of the victims of the fire tragedy in SUM Hospital. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik described the mishap as “very tragic” and directed the government hospitals to provide necessary treatment to patients shifted from the hospita. Patnaik also requested all private hospitals to extend treatment to the patients from the hospitals. The fire was suspected to have spread to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after been triggered by an electric short circuit in the dialysis ward on the first floor of the private hospital. After which, the fire rapidly spread to other areas on the same floor of the hospital building. A massive rescue operation was later launched in the hospital by the commissionerate of police and fire brigade personnel along with volunteers and hospital staff. Around more than 500 indoor patients were trapped in the building, hospital officials said. Around seven fire tenders were sent to control the blaze and over a dozen ambulances deployed to shift the critical patients to other hospitals. Many patients were saved by breaking window panes of the ICU. A high-level probe has been directed into the incident by the Director, Medical Education and Training, by the state government.
Out of the 21 deaths recorded earlier, 14 cases were reported in the Capital Hospital, of which five deaths occurred at AMRI Hospital and two in AIIMS, officials said. Following the fire, around 106 patients were shifted from the private hospital to different places including Capital Hospital, AIIMS, AMRI Hospital, Kalinga Hospital, KIIMS and Hitech Hospital in Bhubaneswar, while some were sent to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
