Last Update: In a verdict that is bound to have a national impact, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD leader Lalu Prasad on Sunday trounced the BJP to win the bitterly fought Bihar assembly polls and deliver a major blow to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who led his party’s challenge. By late evening, the RJD and JD-U had won 51 seats each and were leading in 29 and 20 respectively. The Congress had won 20 seats and was ahead in seven. The BJP was the winner in 35 constituencies and was leading in 18.

The much-maligned Lalu Prasad’s RJD is tipped to end up as the single biggest party with 80 seats followed closely by Nitish Kumar’s JD-U with 71 seats. The Congress would get 27 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s three allies — the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and the Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) — could together bag only six seats while the saffron party won just 53 seats.
7: 15 PM Update: The ‘grand alliance’ of JD(U), RJD and Congress won majority to form the government in Bihar, bagging 126 of the 171 seats declared so far leaving behind NDA, which bagged just 41 seats. The trends on rest 72 seats show RJD is ahead on 28 seats, JD(U) on 17 and Congress 7. In NDA camp, BJP is ahead on 16 seats while its ally LJP is leading on two seats.
6: 35 PM Update: The Grand Secular Alliance in Bihar continued to surge ahead bagging 93 of the 122 seats declared so far leaving behind NDA with just 26. Grand Alliance partner RJD won the maximum 40 seats, followed close behind by JD(U) with 38 and Congress 15. The NDA bagged only 26 with BJP securing 22, RLSP of Union minister Upendra Kushwaha two, LJP one and HAM(S) of Jitan Ram Manjhi one. Two seats have been won by Independents and one by CPI-ML(L).
