Jaipur, September 17: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) Mahant Chandnath passed away at the age of 61 on Sunday. Chandnath was undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi. Reports claim he have been ill for a long time.
According to news agency ANI, Chandnath took his last breath on Saturday at 11:45 p.m. at Delhi’s Apollo Hospital. His last rites will be performed today at his ‘math’ located in Haryana’s Rohtak district at 4 p.m.
Chandnath’s death sent a wave of grief among his followers in Haryana and Rajasthan. Senior BJP leaders also expressed their condolences on his death. A tweet from the Prime Minister’s office expressed grief at the demise of Chandnath and said, ‘Saddened by the demise of LS MP from Alwar, Mahant Chand Nath ji. He will be remembered for his rich social work. My deepest condolences.’
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Hansraj Ahir said using Twitter, “Saddened to know that my colleague in parliament, MP from #Alwar #MahantChandnath passed away. Condolences !”
The BJP District Head of Alwar further informed ANI that the all the events of the day in the district have been cancelled following Chandnath’s death.
Chandnath headed the Nath sect of Hinduism and was also the chancellor of the Mast Nath University. He reportedly chose his successor for the Baba Mastnath Math Asthal Bohar on July 29 this year following his illness.
Chandnath first won the by-elections in 2014 from Rajasthan’s Behror seat. In 2014, he defeated Jitendra Singh of the Congress to became a MP from Alwar.
