New Delhi, Apr 13: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday detained BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in connection with the Unnao rape case. The development comes a few hours after the Unnao rape case investigation was handed over to the CBI following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention. The investigation agency has registered 3 cases against Kuldeep Singh Sengar, news agency ANI reported. Currently, he is being questioned at CBI’s Lucknow office.
The Uttar Pradesh police had on Thursday filed two FIRs under Sections 363 (kidnapping), 366 (abduction of woman), 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against the BJP MLA Sengar.
The FIRs were filed on the basis of a special probe team’s report submitted to the government on the rape of an 18-year-old girl. Following which, Sengar made a visit to the Senior Superintendent of Police’s (SSP) office with at least two dozen supporters to ‘know’ about it. On being questioned, he said that he had come to know if he has been named in any of the FIRs.
“Hum to ye pata lagaane aaye the ki kahin hamara naam kisi FIR me hai ya nahi (I had come to know if my name has appeared in any FIR),” he said, adding, “I just came here to prove that I have done no wrong and would be here anytime the police wants me. While speaking to the reporters, Sengar asserted that he had no role in the rape and the death of rape survivor’s father. The report, submitted by SIT, mentions Sengar as guilty for conspiring the death of the rape survivor’s father. The BJP MLA, however, rejected all the charges saying it is the conspiracy of his opponents.
The teen had accused the MLA of raping her in June last year. The victim’s family had also alleged that the accused MLA’s brother, Atul Singh Sengar, had thrashed the victim’s father on April 3 for refusing to withdraw the FIR over the rape. Up to six police personnel were also suspended for allegedly beating up the victim’s father, who died on April 09.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Kapil Sibal took a jibe at PM Modi over his day-long fast saying the PM should rather speak up against the cases of violence against women. Referring to the Unnao and Kathua gangrape cases, Sibal said, “Why don’t you fast against incidents of rape? And tell the people you are feeling bad about the incidents of rape and fasting?” He asked why the PM is silent over Kathua and Unnao rape cases.
Earlier on Wednesday, the rape survivor claimed that she and her family had been placed under “house arrest”. “We are not allowed to move out, we are constantly guarded…they want us to break down,” she told reporters. “I appeal to CM Yogi Adityanath to provide me justice. The DM has confined me to a hotel room, they are not even serving me water. I just want the culprit to be punished,” she said.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi in the intervening night of April 12 and 13 lead a candlelight vigil at India Gate in protest against the Unnao and Kathua rape cases. Keeping his short, the Congress President asked the government to first protect its daughters before embarking on educating them. Gandhi was accompanied by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Robert Vadra and their 15-year-old daughter, former Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ahmed Patel, Ashok Gehlot, Ambika Soni, Sushmita Dev, Haroon Yusuf and Ajay Maken.
