Chandigarh, Jan 22: With the Union Minister of Finance Arun Jaitley releasing the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) manifesto for the upcoming Punjab assembly elections at a press conference on Sunday in Jalandhar, the BJP seems to have braced up for the upcoming polls. While the Finance Minister emphasised and elaborated various plans of the party if it gets into power, the Finance Minister particularly mentioned free education for girl child belonging to weaker sections of the society as on of the important goals of the Party.

Arun Jaitley, in the press conference, talked about the implementation of the Goods and Services tax (GST) and said this will be the primary focus till its implementation on July 1. The Finance Minister further said, elaborating on the development plans he said, “Free education till PhD will be given to girls belonging to economically weaker sections.”

Talking about the alliance with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Jaitley said that BJP will continue the alliance with SAD and will work on expanding development of the State further if given another term. FM Jaitley also spoke of various benefits of digital economy and demonetisation.

Let us look at the key updates of poll bound Punjab:

  1. The BJP released its manifesto claiming development and implementation of GST as the primary concerns.
  2. Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal requested the Chief Election Commissioner (CEO) of Punjab to take his security cover  away and apply it elsewhere.
  3. As per a report by DNA, as many as 89 candidatures were withdrawn as on January 21.
  4. SAD member of parliament Sher Singh Ghubaya’s son Davinder Singh will contest as a member of Congress  from Fazilka.
  5. FM Arun Jaitley officially launched the BJP’s campiagn in Punjab and attacked Punjab congress chief Amarinder Singh over his family’s alleged Swiss bank accounts.
  6. BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) Ram Lal asked booth level workers to adopt a four-point strategy to garner maximum votes.
  7. Navjot Singh Sidhu began the campaign from Chandigarh and accused the Badal family of ‘looting ‘ Punjab in excise collection, tourism and transport sectors during their tenure of 10 years.
  8. BJP said the exit of Sidhu from their party will not have any impact in poll-bound Punjab.
