Agra, Oct 18: The Uttar Pradesh chief minister on Tuesday rebuffed party MLA Sangeet Som and sought an explanation from him for his remarks on the 17th-century architectural marvel Taj Mahal. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) confirmed Sangeet Som has been asked to explain the reason behind making such a statement that caused a controversy and embarrassment for the party.
The sources also confirmed that Yogi Adityanath would be visiting Taj Mahal on October 26 to give the controversy a rest since it caused a huge row. Some party sources told TOI that the Sardhana MLA’s remarks are “completely his own” and don’t reflect the views of the BJP. “Our party is doing a lot for development of tourism in Agra and we are making schemes for the same,” said BJP state spokesperson Chandra Mohan. Snubbing Som, Adityanath on Tuesday said that the monument was built by ‘blood and sweat of Indian labourers‘. “It does not matter who built it and for what reason. It was built by blood and sweat of Indian labourers. It is very important for us, especially from tourism perspective it is our priority to provide facilities and safety to tourists there,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Shia Waqf Board Syed Waseem Rizvi jumped into the controversy alleging that the Mughals were aiyaash (libidinous) and Taj Mahal cannot be a symbol of worship. “Apart from one or two, most Mughals were ‘aiyaash’. Muslims don’t consider them idols,” he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi too rebuffed Som by disapproving his comments that Taj Mahal is a blot on Indian history. PM Modi took to Twitter and wrote a country cannot progress if it ignores its history and heritage. “The identity of countries which want to progress leaving behind its heritage will go nowhere,” PM added in a tweet.
Following Som’s controversial statements on Taj Mahal, Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan demanded Rashtrapati Bhavan to be demolished as it was a sign of slavery. “Ghulami ki nishaniyon ko mita dena chahiye tha jisme se kal ke shasakon ki boo aati ho. Maine to pehle hi kaha tha, Parliament kyu nahi, Qutab Minar kyu nahi, Rashtrapati Bhavan kyu nahi, Lal Quila kyu nahi, Agra ka Taj Mahal kyu nahi (All signs of slavery should be demolished…whether it is Parliament, Rashtrapati Bhavan or Taj Mahal),” he said.
