BSF-Pakistan Rangers Meet: First bullet will never be fired from the Indian side, says Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, September 11: The DG level talks between the Indian Border Security Forces and the Pakistan Rangers that began on September 9 saw Home Minister Rajnath Singh taking a tough stance relating to the repeated ceasefire violations from the Pakistani side, saying that the first bullet will never be fired from the Indian side. The HM made the statement in a meeting with a 16-member delegation headed by Pakistan Rangers Director General (Punjab) Maj Gen Umar Farooq here on Friday.

During the talks Farooq said that since he was not a part of the government, he cannot make any assurances on prevention of border firing and ceasefire violations. Ceasefire violations in Jammu and Kashmir, including sniper attacks, infiltration, intrusion in Rann of Kutch and smuggling are among the key issues India is expected to raise with Pakistan during the five-day DG level talks. Pakistan has repeatedly denied responsibility and has repeatedly refused to fold any talks about the ceasefire violations which have become a major issue for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. A positive development coming from the meeting however, suggested that it has been decided that a continuous communication channel will be maintained between the two border guarding forces, through phone and email. The Indian side had earlier claimed that for want of better channels of communication, the BSF tries to stop the firing by waving the ‘white flag’, but the other side keeps a constant ‘no response’ strategy in the situation. In the past months, border infiltrations and ceasefire violations have become major security issues, leading to widespread resentment and hostility in the already strained relations between the two countries.
