Earlier in the day, Aiyer had said, “Mujhko lagta hai ki ye aadmi bahut neech kisam ka aadmi hai, isme koi sabhyata nahi hai, or aise mauke par is kisam ki gandi rajniti karne ki kya avashyakta hai?” (This man is a low-life person. He has no culture, standard. What was the need to practise such dirty politics?).” (ALSO READ – Mani Shankar Aiyar Calls PM Modi ‘Neech’: Who Said What)

Here are the top developments:

  • Aiyer received the wrath of the Congress for calling PM Narendra Modi ‘neech aadmi’. As a result, the party suspended him from the primary membership and even issued a show cause notice to him
  • The suspension came after Congress V-P Rahul Gandhi condemned Mani Shankar Aiyer for using such a language against the PM. “BJP and PM routinely use filthy language to attack the Congress party. The Congress has a different culture and heritage. I do not appreciate the tone and language used by Mr Mani Shankar Aiyer to address the PM. Both the Congress and I expect him to apologise for what he said.,” he tweeted
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi lambasted the Congress leader for using the word “neech aadmi” (vile man) for him, claiming he was targeted over his caste. Modi, who was addressing an election rally in Surat, said Aiyar’s comments were an “insult” to Gujarat. “Shriman (Mr) Mani Shankar Aiyar today said that Modi is of ‘neech’ (lower) caste and is ‘neech’ (vile). Is this not an insult to Gujarat,” he said
  • Moments after Rahul Gandhi’s tweet, Mani Shankar Aiyar sought to clarify his statement and said he was just replying to PM Modi in his language. Aiyar added that Hindi was not his mother tongue and if the word “neech” has any meaning other than ‘low level’ then he apologises for it
  • Aiyer’s remarks didn’t go down well with the BJP. Party national president Amit Shah attacked the Congress and said, “Yamraj, Maut Ka Saudagar, Ravan, Gandi Nali Ka Keeda, Monkey, Rabies Victim, Virus, Bhasmasur, Gangu Teli, Goon – These are some words or phrases Congress has used for PM Narendra Modi in the past. Not much has changed. We wish them well. We will continue to serve 125 crore Indians.”
  • Union Minister Arun Jaitley came out strongly against the Congress and said, “I think it is a well thought strategy by the Congress, to use filthy language about PM & spread misinformation but when there is public outrage they apologise.”
  • BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad also hit out at the Congress leader and said that Mani Shankar Aiyer’s mindset is a ‘darbaari’ one. On the other hand, RJD chief Lalu Prasad termed him as mentally unfit

The voting for the two-phased Gujarat Assembly elections 2017 will be held on December 9 and 14. The counting of votes and the results will be announced on December 18.
