Noida, Apr 13: Anti-social elements allegedly vandalised a statue of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar in Noida on Thursday night. The nose of the human-sized statue installed on a podium in Rispal Gadhi village in Bisrakh was found to be broken. Meanwhile, locals have gathered at the spot and are protesting demanding a strict action against those accused. The incident comes a few days before the birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar, famously known as the Father of the Constitution, on April 14.
The village, where the statue is located, is home to around 500 families belonging to Dalit community. Dr Ambedkar’s statue, with the broken nose, was spotted by some residents on Friday morning. The police have been informed about the matter.
The residents of the village have reportedly claimed that anti-social elements are behind the incident. As per a leading media report, the act has been carried out in order to disrupt Ambedkar Jayanti celebration on April 14 and flare up communal tensions.
Senior officials from police and district administration immediately reached to the spot to control the situation. An investigation has been launched in the matter.
Earlier on April 7, a statue of BR Ambedkar was vandalised in Thedwari village in the Nagra area of Ballia in Uttar Pradesh. Right hand, leg and head of the statue was found damaged.
Similar incidents of vandalism were reported earlier in Firozabad, Etah, Siddharthnagar and Allahabad districts. Following these incidents, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had issued directives to the district magistrates and police officials to take steps for ensuring security of the statues installed in their respective districts.
