Earthquake in Myanmar: 6.8 magnitude tremors reported, impact felt till Kolkata, Patna, Guwahati, Agartala

New Delhi, Aug 24: A massive earthquake has been reported from Myanmar. The magnitude of the earthquake is stated to 6.8 on the richter scale, as per Reuters. The epicentre of the earthquake is central Myanmar. The maximum damage is expected to be in the areas surrounding the Myanmarese capital of Naypyidaw. The tremors have been felt in North and Northeast India as well. Tremors have been felt in the Indian cities of Kolkata, Patna, Guwahati. Some colleges and schools have been closed in Kolkata following the tremors been felt. Speaking to NDTV, some students in Kolkata claimed that entire classroom was shaking for at least a period of 60 to 90 seconds. Residents in Patna were also spotted gathering in the open after feeling the tremors. The impact of earthquake has also been felt in dhaka. However, no damage is expected in any parts of India, as the epicentre of the quake is nearly 700 kilometres away from Kolkata.
A high-level alert has been issued in Myanmar. The earthquake comes a day after the 5.3 magnitude earthquake felt in the regions of Indo-Myanmar border. However, the earthquake felt today is evidently much more powerful and could’ve lead to massive loss of property in Myanmar. An alert is also expected to be issued in northeastern parts of India. The depth of the earthquake is stated to be 91 kilometres, as per European Mediterranean Seismological Centre. The exact location of the earthquake epicentre is reported to be 190 km Southwest of Mandalay.
The tremors in Myanmar is reported on the day when a devastating earthquake rippled Italy, costing 37 lives. The earthquake struck in parts located to the northeastern region of Rome. The first tremor was reported at 1:36 hours (GMT). Subsequently 80 aftershocks have been felt. Massive relief and rescue operation is underway.
As per the latest reports, the cities of Bhubaneswar and Gaya have also been impacted by the earthquake. In some parts of Bhubaneswar, people have gathered outside after feeling mild tremors for a period of 40-50 seconds. However, no casualty has been reported so far from any part of the nation.
