Fire at Firecracker Factory leaves 17 Dead, PM Modi Expresses Anguish Over Tragic Incident

New Delhi, Jan 20: At least 17 people were killed and several others injured in a tragic fire accident that took place at a firecracker factory in sector 5 of Bawana industrial area in Delhi on Saturday. Reports said 10 of those killed were women.The official of Delhi Fire Services said the fire broke out at the second floor of the factory in the afternoon. It spread rapidly to other floors of the three-storey building. The fire went out of control after a stock of firecrackers stored at the factory exploded. Eyewitnesses said two factory workers jumped from the second floor to save themselves from the raging fire.

Commenting on the major accident, Director of Delhi Fire Services G C Mishra said that 17 bodies have been recovered so far from the factory in sector-5 of Bawana. “We received 3 calls from Bawana – Sector 1 a plastic factory, 2nd from Sector 5 a cracker storage & Sector 3 a furnace oil storage. All casualties are from Sector 5 fire. Fire is completely under control now. We recovered 17 bodies so far,” Mishra said.

The official of fire department added that fire had broken out in the afternoon and brought under control around in the evening.  “The fire is under control now. The fire had broken out around 3.30 PM and was contained around 7. We have contained the fire on the second floor,” another fire department official said.

PM Narendra Modi Expresses Anguish

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish over the incident. He said his thoughts were with the victims. “Deeply anguished by the fire at a factory in Bawana. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives. May those who are injured recover quickly,” tweeted Modi.

AIIMS trauma center on alert 

Union Health Minister J P Nadda directed the health secretary to provide necessary help to the victims. He also asked AIIMS trauma center to be on alert. The injured people have been admitted to Maharshi Valmiki hospital, Dr. Ambedkar hospital and Raja Harishchandra hospital in Narela.

Kejriwal Orders Probe
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal rushed to the site late in the evening to take stock of the relief and rescue work. The Delhi Government has ordered a probe into the devastating fire, the cause is which is yet to be ascertained.
