From government ambulance service to TB medicines: List of schemes where Aadhaar is required

New Delhi, June 22: In a new addition, Aadhaar card will now be mandatory to avail the benefits of the government ambulance service in Uttar Pradesh. Reportedly, the move is intended to keep a check on the irregularities occurring in providing the ambulance services.

In the recent past, the government has made Aadhaar Card compulsory to avail benefits of various government schemes, programmes and services. The step has been taken to check fraud, cheating and corruption practices.

Here is the list of services requiring UID:

  • PAN card and Income Tax returns- A recent judgement by the Supreme Court passed in favour of Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, 1961 mandates linking of PAN card with Aadhaar. The Apex Court also ruled that the link between PAN and Aadhaar is necessary for individuals filing income tax returns. The order will come into force from July 1.
  • Tuberculosis patients- A notification has been issued by the Union Health Ministry making aadhaar mandatory for TB patients availing treatment under the government’s Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP).
  • Opening bank accounts- December 31 has been set as the deadline by the government for individuals to link Aadhaar with their bank accounts. Failure of the same may lead to the closure of accounts. Also, Aadhaar card is now compulsory for transaction above  Rs. 50,000.
  • MGNREGA- The Central Government made Aadhaar card compulsory to avail the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which would provide with pension and provident fund benefits.
  • Maternity Benefit Programme- In january 2017, the Central Government made Aadhaar card mandatory for pregnant women to avail the benefit under Maternity Benefit Programme.
  • Students of TISS- Tata Institute of Social Sciences has made Aadhaar card mandatory for payment of fee and for taking taking biometric attendance of students. The Aadhaar will also be required for the authentication of documents.
  • Victims of Bhopal Gas Tragedy- From March, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers issued a notification making Aadhaar compulsory for Bhopal Gas tragedy victims to avail compensation from the government.
  • Airport employees- In order to tighten the security at airports, airport employees have been asked to carry Aadhaar card as an ID to enter and exit the airport premises.
  • Sport players-  Aadhaar has been made compulsory for sport participants to bring in transparency and avoid age fraud.
  • LPG and Kerosene subsidy- In 2015, the Supreme Court linked Aadhaar to public distribution system (PDS) and LPG subsidy to eliminate corruption.
  • Crop insurance- Farmers would have to carry an Aadhaar card for foodgrain subsidy and cash subsidy to avail the benefits of crop insurance.

With the increase in the cases of corruption and to bring in a transparency in the system, the government has made it mandatory for the people to furnish Aadhaar card to claim the benefits of various schemes.
