SP’s Praveen Kumar Nishad defeated BJP’s Upendra Dutt Shukla on the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat, in what was being seen as a prestige battle for the ruling party. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, who had been a five-time MP from the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat, said that the result was unexpected. On the oother hand, it was a huge win for the BSP, too, who had supported the SP in these bypolls. (Updates on Uttar Pradesh Bypolls 2018 results)
The Lucknow Assembly, meanwhile, was adjourned following uproar over slow announcement of results of Gorakhpur Lok Sabha bypolls.
Gorakhpur has been a BJP bastion with UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath having represented the seat in Lok Sabha for 5 terms. Before him, the seat belonged to his mentor Avaidyanath thrice. A loss on this seat would mean a huge loss for the BJP as it may also affect Yogi’s credibility in Gorakhpur.
Not just Gorakhpur, the BJP also lost the Phulpur seat, which was UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya’s seat. SP’s Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel won on this seat by a huge margin against BJP’s Kaushlendra Patel.
