Voting for the Gorakhpur bye-election took place on Sunday, March 11. A low voter turnout of 47.45 per cent was recorded. Even as the SP and BSP see this going in their favour, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is confident of a BJP victory.
The key contenders in Gorakhpur are Upendra Shukla of the BJP, Praveen Nishad of the SP and Surhita Chatterjee Karim of the Congress Party.
Gorakhpur is a crucial seat for the BJP as it is the bastion of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who represented the Lok Sabha seat five times. Before Adityanath, the seat was represented in Parliament by his mentor Yogi Avaidyanath thrice. Losing this seat would mean a huge loss for the BJP.
Yogi was seen campaigning aggressively for the Gorakhpur seat as it is a fight for pride on this seat. It remains to be seen whether the BSP support for SP can work against BJP.
