New Delhi, Nov 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed the recommendations made by the Goods And Services Tax (GST) council, headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. He said that the recommended changes will further benefit people of the country. He also said that the recommendations were in the spirit of the feedback the government was getting from stakeholders.
“The recommendations made by the GST Council today will further benefit our citizens and add strength to the GST. These recommendations are in spirit of the continuous feedback we are getting from various stakeholders on GST,” he wrote on Twitter.
PM Modi further said that people’s participation was at the core of government’s working and its decisions were people-friendly and people-centric.
“Jan Bhagidari is at the core of our working. All our decisions are people-inspired, people-friendly and people-centric. We are working tirelessly for India’s economic integration through GST,” he added.
The GST Council met today in Guwahati and made several significant changes in the GST structure. The council decided to move various items into lower tax brackets. Thirteen items were moved from 18 to 12 per cent slab, six items from 18 to 5 per cent slab, eight items from 12 per cent to 5 per cent, six items from 5 per cent to nil. Apart from this, 178 items were moved from 28 per cent to 18 per cent GST slab. With this, only 50 items remained in the 28 per cent slab.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also announced that the GST council decided to keep the tax levied on AC and non-AC restaurants to be 5 per cent flat.
