New Delhi, Oct 7:  In a bid to lure voters ahead of Gujarat Assembly elections , the Narendra Modi-led government has slashed the GST rate for Khakra (a Gujarati snack) from 12 per cent to 5 per cent. While addressing the nation after an eight-hour long Goods and Services Tax (GST) council meeting, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced a list of products for which the GST rate has been reduced.

After the meeting of GST council, Jaitley said,”It’s almost three months since GST roll out returns have been filed for first two months as well. So it was a time to deliberate on its effect on various trades and the transition.”

Apart from Khakhra, the GST rates of 27 other commodities including roti, namkeens, stationery, man-made yarn have also been revised, with most of them brought to five per cent category. Of daily use items, GST on zari work, unbranded ayurveda medicine, dried mango, e-waste, plastic and rubber waste has been reduced to five per cent. Tax on stationery items, diesel engine parts, pump parts, flooring stones other than marble and granite has been reduced to 18 per cent.

GST has been abolished on import of a number of goods, including rigs for oil and gas exploration and medicines supplied free by international agencies and bonafide gifts up to Rs 5,000.
