Guidelines to be issued for resolving military-civil problems

Pune, Jun 8: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said a clear set of guidelines will be issued to resolve problems between military establishments and civil authorities of different cantonment boards in the country. “A misunderstanding can occur between civil and military authorities due to various problems in cantonments as there is a growing desire for more civic amenities. In proper consultation with all stakeholders, clear guidelines will be issued to resolve the issues to the satisfaction of many if not all,” Parrikar said. He was here to inaugurate an orientation programme for elected representatives of Cantonment Boards falling in the jurisdiction of the Southern Command, headquartered in the city. Making a reference to the issues such as closure of roads in cantonment areas and revision of outdated bye-laws of Cantonment Boards, the minister said civilians should also know that all military installations are “sensitive” places involving the aspect of national defence.

He urged the elected representatives of Cantonment Boards to study legal aspects of their functioning in relation to the military prerogatives for a better coordination. About 150 representatives of Cantonment Boards from various states are attending the two-day workshop here.
