New Delhi, Nov 4: Patidar quota agitation spearhead Hardik Patel on Friday said that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) might indulge in unfair practices to win the upcoming Assembly elections in Gujarat. Patel claimed that the BJP will try to malign his image with a fake sex CD.

“The BJP has prepared a doctored sex CD to defame me and it will be released just before the election. What else can one expect from the BJP? So just wait, watch and enjoy,” Times of India quoted Patel as saying.  He also alleged that defective Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and VVPAT might be used in Gujarat polls.

“3,550 VVPAT machines failed in the first level test by the Election Commission. I am very much sure that BJP will fight the Assembly polls through unfair means only,” Patel tweeted yesterday.

Refuting Patel’s claim, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) for Gujarat, B B Swain, said that the discovery of defective VVPATs should be taken in a positive manner. Talking to news agency PTI, Swain clarified,”For this polls, we require 70,182 VVPATs. The EC has already made them available to us. Additional 4,150 such units were also given to us. Now, as per our standard procedure, we have conducted first level checks on 69,654 machines and found 3,550 units defective. Such defective machines were already sent back to the factories for repair.”

“We reject even those units which were having a minor crack on their body, as we never allow defective VVPATs. Discovery of defective units is part of our procedure. This rejection should be taken positively. It shows our commitment that we never allow defective machines,” Swain said on Patel’s allegations.

Meanwhile, BJP leader and Minister of State for the north-east region Jitendra Singh on Friday said that the Patidar community had begun questioning the individual agenda of Hardik Patel. “The entire community (Patidar) knows that only the BJP can secure its future. The Congress has created a confusion in this issue and has not cleared its stand. In fact, the entire Patidar community is questioning the individual agenda of Hardik,” Singh had said.

Singh stressed that the Patel community in Gujarat would vote for the BJP irrespective of Rahul Gandhi’s perception of “truth being on Congress’ side”.
