Ahmedabad, Dec 8: Of the 822 candidates contesting in the second phase of the Gujarat Assembly Elections 2017, scheduled to be held on December 14, a total of 101 (12%) have criminal cases filed against them. The candidates of the Congress party have topped the list with 25 (28%) of 88 candidates featuring in the list of candidates with a criminal background, a report by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) said.
The report analysed self-sworn affidavits of 822 of 851 candidates from including 6 national parties and 344 Independent candidates, contesting in the Gujarat Assembly Elections 2017 phase II on December 14. Of the analysed candidates, 64 (8%) candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves. The criteria for criminal offences include cases related to murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, crimes against women etc.
Of the 86 candidates Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contesting 22 (26%) were found to have criminal cases filed against them. From the Congress party, 25 (28%) out of 88 candidates had criminal cases against them. Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has 6 (8%) out of 74 candidates with criminal background contesting in the second phase of Gujarat elections 2017.

13 (15%) out of 86 candidates from BJP, 18 (21%) out of 88 candidates from Congress, 2 (3%) out of 74 candidates from BSP, 3 (11%) out of 27 candidates from NCP, 1 (14%) out of 7 candidates from AAP, and 14 (4%) out of 344 Independent candidates analysed have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
The second phase of Gujarat Assembly Elections 2017 would be held on December 14. The result of both the phases of Gujarat polls would be declared on December 18.
