Haridwar, Apr 8: A Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader poured petrol on himself and attempted immolation in front of a police post in Haridwar’s Jwalapur on Sunday over his demand to shut down the illegally running meat shops in the region.

The local VHP leader, Charanjeet Pahwa, was rushed to a nearby hospital by the Haridwar police. He was later referred to a hospital in Dehradun.

The leader, in his late 40s, has suffered 40 per cent burn injured, informed Jwalapur police. However, his condition is said to be ‘stable’.

Speaking to the Indian Express, Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Krishna Kumar informed that Pahwa had recently submitted a memorandum to the Haridwar city magistrate demanding closure of illegal meat shops in Jwalapur.

Reportedly, he had also mentioned in the memorandum that he will immolate self if no strict action is taken.

Adding further, Kumar told that the administration tried to contact him but, his mobile phone was switched off since two days. He also claimed that no one from his organisation (VHP) had any idea about his whereabouts.
