New Delhi, Oct 12: The Election Commission on Thursday announced that voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines will be used in polling in the upcoming Himachal Pradesh Assembly Election. The poll panel also announced that model code of conduct will be in place from Thursday.
Chief Election Commissioner AK Jyoti said that the panel will ensure VVPATs along with EVMs on all booths.
“We will have VVPATs along with EVMs; height of voting compartments will be increased to 30 inches,” he said in a press conference.
CEC said that the size of screens of VVPAT machines will be increased to 10 cm.
The elections to Himachal Pradesh Assembly will be held in a single phase on November 9. The counting of votes will be held on December 18. (Also read: VVPATS, Height of Voting Compartment to be Raised in Himachal Polls: All You Need to Know)
What is a VVPAT machine?
Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) or Verifiable Paper Record (VPR) is a machine that intends to act as a verification system for the voters. It tells a voter that his vote is cast correctly. Once a vote is cast a voter gets a paper that shows the person and party he/she has voted for.
However, Indian VVPATS will be different. Former Election Commissioner SY Qureshi said in a tweet that the voters won’t get a slip. The slip will go in a sealed box, which will be cross-checked with the figures of EVMs.
“No. The voter (sic) won’t get the slip. It will go into a sealed box. Slips could be counted to cross check the figures in Evms,” he wrote.
