Hyderabad, Mar 28: A 17-year-old girl was set on fire by her jilted lover on Tuesday in Hyderabad. The accused, who works as a vegetable seller, is also a minor. The reason behind the shocking act is said to be the girl’s decision to marry someone else. The girl, who had received 70 per cent burns, has been struggling for life in Osmania Hospital.
The incident was reported on Tuesday at around 2 PM when the girl was alone in her house in Ganga Nagar. The boy, according to the reports, wanted the contact details of the girl’s fiancee. The two had an argument when the girl refused to share the details. When he kept insisting on the contact details, the girl locked her phone inside a cupboard.
“On this issue, the victim and the boy in conflict with law had an argument. The annoyed boy picked up a kerosene bottle and doused her with it. He then gagged her and started searching for a matchbox,” Amberpet inspector AP Anand Kumar was quoted as saying by TOI.
The stove was on. When the accused didn’t find a matchbox, he too the victim’s drenched dupatta to the stove, lit it and threw it on the girl. He also suffered some burns on his hands.
The victim’s neighbours rushed to save the girl upon hearing her screams. When the boy as asked about the girl, he lied that the girl was trying to immolate herself and he received the injuries while trying to save her. The two were taken to Osmania Hospital.
When the victim was interrogated, she managed to give her statement. The preliminary investigation revealed that the boy wanted to marry the girl but the girl’s marriage had already been fixed to some other man. She even has had an engagement and the girl’s parents were waiting for her to turn 18.
“Both of them were drop-outs and were not pursuing their education. As they had been classmates at one point, they knew each other,” Amberpet Inspector AP Anand Kumar told TNM. A case has been registered under Section 307 (Attempt to murder) of the IPC.
