Jallikattu: Over 200 detained for protesting against SC ban on bull taming sport
Reportedly, during the protest that lasted overnight in a small town called Alanganallur, the protestors also sought the organisation of the bull taming festival.
Madurai, Jan 17: Tamil Nadu police has detained over 200 people in Madurai district for protesting against the Supreme Court ban on Jallikattu. Reportedly, during the protest that lasted overnight in a small town called Alanganallur, the protestors also sought the organisation of the bull taming festival.
As per the Superintendent of Police in Madurai, around 200 people have been taken into preventive custody. They had assembled unlawfully, despite several warnings by the police. “They will be released soon,” he further informed.
Meanwhile, the villagers in Alanganallur are demanding the release of the people.

Jallikattu is also referred to as Eruthazhuvuthal locally and is practiced in Tamil Nadu as a part of Pongal celebrations.
A ban on the bull taming sport was imposed by the Supreme Court recently, citing animal welfare issues. Jallikattu has remained banned for the last three years.

“You basically see bulls having tails bitten, being stabbed with sickles, agitated, stuff rubbed into their eyes with twenty people jumping on him,” Advocate and Animal Rights Activist, Rudra Krishna was earlier quoted as as saying.
Amid the fight over whether Jallikattu should be banned or not, recently, a war of words had broken out between DMK Working President MK Stalin and animal rights non-profit PETA over teh issue wherein, the leader called the animal rights NGO as “anti-national” and PETA called the criticism “cheap and ineffective”.
Earlier on January 15, amid protests against the ban on Jallikattu, police had detained several people at various places in some southern districts for attempting to organise the bull taming sport. Police said youths were detained at Mudakathan, Alanganallur, Palamedu and Vilangudi in Madurai district, at Nallampatti in Dindigul district and Pottuchavadi in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu for trying to hold the sport defying the apex court ban.
