Jallikattu row LIVE: Bill to replace ordinance passed by Tamil Nadu Assembly
The pro-Jallikattu movement entered the seventh day on Monday morning.
As the protests against the ban Jallikattu entered the seventh day on Monday morning, the police cracked down on protesters at the Marina Beach in Chennai despite the protest being a peaceful one. The site that has remained the centre of pro-Jallikattu movement for the past one week, has now been partially cleared with protesters claiming that the policemen were beating them.
Meanwhile, protests continue in other parts of Tamil Nadu. Protesters gathered in Madurai to demand a permanent solution to the issue.
As protests continue, the Tamil Nadu government is all set to move a Bill to replace the Ordinance on the bull-taming sport Jallikattu on Monday. The Bill will also seek amendment of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. According to reports, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam-led AIADMK government is expected to seek the support of the main Opposition DMK and its allies Congress and IUML.
As protests continue to intensify, the railways also seem to bearing the brunt. On Sunday, nearly eight trains were cancelled and many partially cancelled across the state. Protesters say that the Ordinance will expire in six months and therefore, isn’t a permanent lift on the ban on Jallikattu.
However, Jallikattu was held in some parts of Tamil Nadu after the Ordinance came in. At least two people died and 83 others were injured during an unregulated Jallikattu event held at Raapusal village in Pudukottai district. Thousands of people also participated in the sport in other parts of the state on Sunday.
