Chennai, Dec 6: J Jayalalithaa passed away on Monday, December 5, at Apollo hospital on Monday leaving thousands mourning. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo’s health deteriorated after suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening. Funeral of the popular leader will held at 4:30 pm at the Dr MGR Memorial site off Marina beach. Live streaming of the funeral can be watched live at Sun News. Her mortal remains were kept at Rajaji Hall for the public to pay their last respects. Draped in green colour saree, Jayalalithaa’s body was taken from her Poes Garden residence to Rajaji Hall, early this morning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the death of the Chief Minister. Modi will also be a part of the funeral proceedings. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad , Delhi Chief Minister will be among other leaders to attend the funeral ceremony in Chennai.

The Centre declared one-day state mourning today in view of the demise of Jayalalithaa. Both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha adjourned after obituary in memory of Jayalalithaa in the Parliament. Social media continued to be dominated by condolences to Jayalalithaa. Twitterati described her as “Iron lady” for the generous schemes she started for the people of Tamil Nadu. Jayalalithaa passed away at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai at 11.30 pm on Monday. Jayalalithaa’s loyalist O Panneerselvam was sworn in as Chief Minister following the announcement of her death on Monday might. Panneerselvam was elected at a ceremony at the Raj Bhawan along with all the ministers. He has been in the position twice earlier when she was convicted in corruption cases. Following deteriorating health condition of Jayalalithaa, her party workers had thronged the Apollo Hospitals premises wishing for a speedy recovering. To manage the crowd and prevent any mishap, security was beefed up around the hospital. Security has also been increased at the venue where people bid a tearful adieu to later minister. Cries of “Amma” could be heard through the crowds thronging to catch a last glimpse of the 68-year-old.

MG Ramachandran with whom Jayalalithaa has been paired earlier, later groomed her in politics after founding AIADMK.
