Kanwar Yatra 2017: Dadri, Ghaziabad Police orders Non-Veg Eateries to Shut Down
District Magistrate Nidhi Kesarwani had ordered that all the meat shops in Ghaziabad district will remain closed till the ‘Maha Shivratri’ celebrations.
New Delhi, July 20: After the commencement of the Kanwar Yatra, the District Administration in Ghaziabad, Dadri and adjoining districts told the eateries serving non-veg food including egg along the route of the pilgrim to shut down for a week. Although the orders were given earlier, surprise visits on Wednesday were conducted to detect any violation.
Ram Sen Singh, SHO, Dadri police station was quoted by The Times of India as saying, “We have also removed vendors serving non-vegetarian food. They will be off the road till the religious season of kanwar yatra is on.” Earlier, District Magistrate Nidhi Kesarwani had ordered that all the meat shops in the district will remain closed till the ‘Maha Shivratri’ celebrations. Similarly, security was strengthened for the ongoing Kanwar yatra with SWAT (special weapons and tactics) teams and bomb squads pressed into service in the district.
The Uttar Pradesh government had already declared a high alert in the state after the terror attack on Amarnath pilgrims in Kashmir and the police has been directed to be extra vigilant during the yatra, city SP (superintendent of police), Akash Tomar said.
Quick response teams have also been formed to deal with contingencies, he said. Commandos, SWAT teams, and bomb disposal squads, equipped with sophisticated automatic weapons, have been deployed along with sniffer dogs, Tomar said.
The tradition of Kanwar Yatra is believed to be a part of the Shaivite faith. The pilgrimage was done by saints and hermits until early Nineteen century but got prominence later within the common masses. The devotees usually collect water from holy pilgrims like Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand. Taking safety of the devotees in stock, arrangements are made by the Uttar Pradesh Administration. Apart from setting up care centres and night shelters across the routes, traffic will be diverted at many places.
