Kashmir issue to remain on top of Pakistan's agenda during dialogue with India, says Sartaj Aziz

New Delhi, Feb 7: As India and Pakistan once again try to hold foreign secretary level talks and look for a date for the same, the latter is expected to increase pressure on the Kashmir issue, during the talks. The talks, which are ant to launch the recently announced comprehensive bilateral dialogue (CBD) process, can once again be expected to be caught in a stalemate situation as Pakistan continues to hold the issue on the top of its priority list.

According to a report in the Times of India, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s chief advisor on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz announced on Saturday that the issue will remain on top of Pakistan’s agenda for the talks. During the celebration of the ‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’, Sharif had stressed that peace in South Asia was difficult until the Kashmir issue was resolved. Radio Pakistan said that Sharif said that Islamabad can be expected to push the international community to fulfil its responsibility in the implementation of United Nations resolution on Kashmir. Pakistan has made it clear that no progress in the bilateral talks will be made until the Kashmir issue, amongst other outstanding issues, is discussed in detail. The situation once again stands at the brink of a deadlock as India is adamant to not include the Kashmir issue as a part of the dialogues, which it wants to be centred around discussions on terrorism on Pakistan’s soil. Although government has repeatedly stressed on the need for Pakistan to start cracking down on terror, it has also maintained the commitment towards peace process and dialogue on terror.
