Srinagar, October 11: In a major embarrassment for the Jammu and Kashmir government, separatist leader Asiya Andrabi appeared on a poster of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign on Wednesday. The poster was displayed at a function to create awareness about educating girls in South Kashmir’s Kokernag area.
Interestingly, Andrabi featured in the poster with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, Mother Teresa, Tennis players Sania Mirza and Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi. No clarification has been issued by the government in the matter.
Who is Asiya Andrabi?
Andrabi is a pro-Pakistan separatist. She celebrated Pakistan’s Independence Day on August 14. Andrabi was booked under Public Safety Act in October 2016 for instigating violence in the valley.
Andrabi is married to Ashiq Hussain Faktoo, a Hizbul Mujahideen leader, who is now in jail. A few captured militants have confessed that videos of her speeches are shown at terror training camps across the Line of Control.
She attracted notoriety during the Amarnath agitation which resulted in the killing of more than 100 protesters. However, her hypocrisy was exposed when her teenage son applied for an Indian passport to pursue studies abroad.
She is facing probe for meeting young persons who were later arrested for their involvement in activities of banned organisation Islamic State. Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh had said, “Definitely, the government and police will verify these facts. There is every apprehension of such a thing. If it is proved, then the government will act as per law.”
