New Delhi, Sept 20: At least one jawan was martyred and another injured after terrorists attacked a camp of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in Jammu & Kashmir’s Ramban district on Wednesday.

Highlights

  • 14th battalion of SSB was attacked in Banihal.
  • The SSB camp was charged with guarding the strategic Banihal tunnel.
  • One jawan was martyred in the attack, whereas, another was left injured.

The attack, carried out at around 8 PM, was targeted against the 14th battalion of SSB, posted in Banihal town of Ramban. The SSB party was charged to guard the strategic Banihal tunnel, the 8.45-km stretch which connects Ramban to Qazigund. More details are awaited.

The deceased jawan was reported to be a head constable of the SSB. Another jawan, who was seriously injured, was rushed to the Ramban district hospital for treatment.

The militant attack comes in the backdrop of a spate of successful operations launched by the security forces, inflicting a severe blow to the insurgency in the Valley.

A total of 147 militants have been killed in Kashmir this year, with the most recent target being Lashkar-e-Taiba’s Abu Ismail, who masterminded the attack on Amarnath pilgrims in July this year. On the contrary, 110 militants were killed in the same period (January-September 14) in 2016.

Meanwhile, the defence casualties this year, summed up to 44 between January to September.

As per the statistics, the number of casualties – security personnel and militants – surged after the surgical strikes were carried out on September 29 last year. A total of 178 militants have been killed since the clandestine operations were carried out in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir. While 34 among them were gunned down during their infiltration bids, the remaining were neutralised in gunbattles and encounters.
