Kashmir unrest: Curfew to be lifted in most parts of Valley
However, local sources claim that the civil curfew would remain in place at least till the festival of Bakra Eid. The protest calendar in the Valley has been issued till September 1.
Srinagar, Aug 28: After 51 days of curfew in Kashmir, government is mulling the idea of uplifting curfew from most parts of the Valley. As per NDTV sources, curfew will shortly cease to exist in entire region of the Valley except Pulwama, Nowhatta and Maharaj Gunj. However, reasonable restrictions under section 144 will continue. The development comes barely hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the current unrest in Kashmir through his radio show Mann ki Baat. Modi expressed the need to give a healing touch to the Valley and asserted that every life lost in the conflict, whether it is the security personnel or the protesting youth, it is a grave loss to the nation.
A day earlier, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti reached the national capital to attend a meeting with the Prime Minister on the ongoing conflict in the Valley. Following the meet, Mehbooba reiterated that PM Modi has assured aide in all manner to put Kashmir back on the track of development. She appealed the aggrieved section of the Valley to give her one more chance. PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig even reached out to the separatist Hurriyat, urging them to support Mehbooba Mufti to restore peace in the state. “I appeal (Syed Ali Shah) Geelani saheb to help us in reinstating normalcy. Mehbooba Mufti is the first woman chief minister of Kashmir. She is like your daughter,” Baig was quoted as saying.
However, local sources claim that the civil curfew would remain in place at least till the festival of Bakra Eid. The protest calendar in the Valley has been issued till September 1.
The curfew was imposed following the death of militant Burhan Wani, who was perceived as a youth icon in the state. His death led to the eruption of protests across the Valley. The toll of those killed in the unrest has reached 71. Earlier in the week, Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh expressed the need to reinstate normalcy in the Valley by holding talks with all the stakeholders.
